Deauville had already established itself as a champion of American cinema when Professor Alain Patel launched his idea of embracing Asian cinema in the same way. The first Deauville Asian Film Festival took place in March 1999 as a showcase for the diversity and variety of cinematic production throughout Asia.
In 2004, the organisation of the Deauville Asian Film Festival was taken over conjointly by the Deauville International Center and Le Public Système Cinéma, also responsible for the organisation of the American Film Festival. A high-quality cultural programme and the attendance of famous Asian stars won the festival its spurs. The Deauville International Centre hosted an Asia village for the first time on the occasion of the 8 th Asian Film Festival, in 2006, as a complement to the event, for the purpose of inviting the public at large to discover freely the rich variety of all aspects of Asian culture: gastronomy, sports, health and well-being, economy and training, arts and culture.
The Deauville Asian Film Festival now welcomes over 30,000 visitors. For five days, a refreshing wind charged with the colours, the perfumes, the rumours and the mystery of the Orient wafts around Deauville. The rich diversity of the different cultures represented contributes to the atmosphere, with the cinema offering us breathtaking emotions and discoveries from Asia's most talented directors – year after year, the festival's programme allows us to witness the blooming of new talent in the film-making world – and with the Asia village, hosted at the heart of the Deauville International Centre and occupying some 3,000m², where sporting demonstrations, the possibility of savouring the delights of Asian cuisine, and fine and comic art exhibitions ceaselessly fill visitors with a sense of wonder. Notable amongst the visitors are the Ambassadors of all 18 Asian countries, who will be meeting with Norman businesses established in Asia and Asian students in France.
The Deauville Asian Film Festival is a veritable hotbed of Asian discovery.
